“Dancing Cheek to Cheek” as performed by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers is in A A B B C A form. The song was written by Irving Berlin and originally performed by the duo in his original musical Top Hat. Each section of the song form serves a purpose in the emotions expressed by the singer. The A section, in which the singer is in Heaven, seems to be his personal musings about the situation he is in. He is dancing with the girl he fancies and it has put him in a Heavenly mood. The music is accordingly major and expressing his happiness. When Astaire reaches the B section, he lists off things he could be doing, but that couldn’t match this feeling he’s having. This section is sung in a similar major and obviously happy manor. The C section is the most drastically different part. His voice gets more forceful and resonant with “Dance with me” and he emphasizes Rogers’s role as the source of all this happiness. He returns to A for the final portion of the song which brings him back to the feelings he’s having while singing. The lyrics of this song are traditional of a tin-pan alley style composition because they are gender-neutral with a lot of romantic imagery. The singer’s love for his/her partner is compared to mountains and rivers. Natural comparisons such as these are another emphasized aspect of this writing style.
